In Richmond County, Georgia is one of the state's best kept secrets. The city of Augusta is located on the South Carolina border, and it has about 197,000 people that call this region home. It's just a short 150 mile jog to the capital city of Atlanta and only 70 miles from Columbia. Located right on the Savannah River, this attraction brings a great deal of fishermen and other boating enthusiasts to the area.
The subtropical climate allows comfort to visitors any time of year. The winters are unbelievably mild, and the summers are nice and sunny. Though the Atlanta area does get some snowfall, don't count on that in this area. If you are looking for a great place to take a vacation this year, why not visit Augusta? It's off the beaten path and has many attractions that are sure to please. Take a charter bus and bring your friends by the dozens to see what this city has to offer. Here are just some of the reasons why so many come to this state for rest and relaxation.
Phinizy Swamp Nature Park
If you're looking for a place that has sweet serenity from nature, then you simply must visit Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. No, it's not the rolling waves of the ocean, but it does provide that peace that only nature can. There are bike and walking trails all around the waterways. The Spanish moss hanging from the trees just give the area the vibe of the Old South. Spend a day here and enjoy the sites and take a bike ride or hike the spot many call "Nature in the City."
The Augusta Mall draws a great crowd each day. This mall has upscale stores that span two floors. The selection of stores is massive and there is plenty for all styles. This shopping center has been here since 1978 and has quite a reputation for being exceptional to the locals. Not only do they have amazing shopping, but the food isn't too bad either. Restaurants like Buca Di Beppo and P.F. Chang's China Bistro, are just a few of the eateries located inside.
The locals give avid support to this vintage theater. It's one of the oldest standing establishments in this area. There is a massive renovation underway to restore the building to its former glory. They are still open and you can see productions and even the symphony orchestra during show times. The nice big seats are truly comfortable, as well as the ambiance of the nostalgic theater. The Imperial Theatre is one thing that should be on everyone's bucket list of things to do here.
The Haunted Pillar is an unusual attraction right in the middle of this town. It's a legend in this area that just never seemed to die. The locals believe that there is a curse on the pillar and those who touch it will feel the effects on their life. The area around this popular attraction is electrified and many feel creepy just by driving by. Legend has it that the pillar was cursed by a local preacher for not being able to spread the gospel there. He made a declaration that the only thing left standing would be the pillar and the area would be destroyed. Most thought he was crazy until a freak tornado came through and destroyed the area. It left the pillar untouched. The events made a believer out of the locals. Since that time, those who have touched the pillar have said to experience horrible things, even death. If you love supernatural things, the Haunted Pillar is a must see place.
Museum of History
This museum is certainly unique. It has moved locations and the new spot allows them to showcase bigger and better historical items from the area. Where else can you climb aboard an old-fashioned train and see how the local traveled back then? There are many things to see here and plenty of artifacts of days gone by. They host local events and if you so desire, you can even get married here. It's a museum that is all about the locals and preserving the integrity of this city's history.
