This is the first lighthouse planned and paid for by the newly established United States government back in George Washington's time. It is located on an active Military base so be ready to go through some clearance to enter. The awesome view from the top will take the dedicated effort to climb 191 steps. there is also a small gift shop at the base and most workers know much about the lighthouse's history so be sure to pick their brains.
Norfolk
Fishing
What better way to experience the Chesapeake Bay than to see what's in it! Enjoy fishing off of the Ocean View Fishing Pier, or if you prefer, you can try the Willoughby Fishing Pier. Both are in Norfolk. The waters are full of fish ready to be caught on the hook such as trout, flounder and cobia. If open water is more to your liking, you can also charter a boat for a few hours or a full day for more fishing.
A great way to spend the day is enjoying the beautiful plants of the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. The gardens began in 1938 and now consist of 175 acres that are home to 52 distinctive themed gardens, 95 species of birds and 30 kinds of butterflies. The gardens also have special programs such as WOW children's program, bike nights and boat tours.
Roanoke
A 21 acre vineyard established in 1998. This vineyard sits on a 2000 foot mountaintop overlooking Roanoke. Valhalla produces cabernet sauvignon, syrah, merlot, chardonnay, cab franc and more. Come for a wine tasting of five wines and experience their cave tours. Every Friday from April through September from 4pm to 8pm, you can come and enjoy wonderful wine and lively music from local bands.
Mill Mountain Star
Constructed in 1949 for the Christmas season, the star has become a landmark in Roanoke. It is the world's largest freestanding illuminated man-made star. Weighing 10,000 pounds, and standing 88.5 feet tall, it is visible from the air for 60 miles. Climbing up the mountain to where the star resides allows you to see a breathtaking panoramic view of Roanoke. It is an attraction not to be missed.
This state has much to offer whether you are looking to be a beach bum or climb every mountain. Be sure to ask the locals for any sites that are off the beaten path. An adventure is sure to await you on your next vacation.
