Why You Must Explore Maryland

The Mid-Atlantic state of Maryland is not one that gets too much attention. However, from top to bottom it is lined with breathtaking beauty to behold. Due to the fact that one side of Maryland sits on the Atlantic Ocean, it's a popular tourist destination for many. When planning your next vacation to see tranquil places with mesmerizing landscapes, here are five sites you need to visit in this state.

American Visionary Art Museum - Baltimore

Located in the big city of Baltimore, the American Visionary Art Museum is a popular tourist destination. It opened its doors in 1955 and has been serving the public ever since. The exhibition space has more than 67,000 square feet of art. It's not a traditional museum by any means, and director Rebecca Alban Hoffberger wants to keep it that way. It's just one thing to see in Baltimore. The city is full of art, historically significant sites, and amazing restaurants.

Adventure Sports Center International - McHenry

For those who love the thrill and adventure that riding the white water rapids brings, there's no better place to be than the Adventure Sports Center International. This canoe/kayak slalom center is a hot spot for enthusiasts all around. From river boarding to hiking the woods; this place has it all. McHenry is a great little town that sits on Deep Creek Lake. It's also home to Garrett College.

Chesapeake City

This city is home to 700 people in the state. However, it is one of the best-hidden gems in the area. This city has a fantastic bridge that overlooks the Chesapeake & Delaware Canals. Originally called Bohemia Village, it changed its name to the canals in 1839. The city has much historic charm and plenty of water activities to do. If you love sightseeing, there are ample opportunities for that here, but the quirky little shops with gourmet treats seem to be the real thrill. Since part of this area is also in Virginia, you can explore the best of both worlds.

Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center - Cambridge

History buffs should make sure to stop by the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center. Tubman was the lady responsible for helping the slaves to escape through the Underground Railroad system. Tubman was called the "Moses" to her people. This museum is located in the city of Cambridge, which also has plenty of other fascinating places to see and experience. In this same city, you can also visit the childhood home of Tubman and take a tour. The fascinating center will give amazing photographs and historically significant artifacts. It's great for all age groups.

Assateague Island - Delmarva

Many people hop on a charter bus and head on over to Assateague Island. It's not too far from Ocean City, and it offers many things that the overpopulated areas don't. The Assateague Island National Seashore is home to many wild horses. With two miles of uninterrupted shoreline, no wonder National Geographic rated this place in the top 10 state parks in the country. People come to this area to take part in surf fishing, sea kayaking, hiking, and biking. It's one of the states highlight areas for sure.
