Funded by the six Rubens brothers, the Chicago firm of Rapp & Rapp Architects designed the property, helmed by namesakes C. W. and George L. Rapp. Constructed by Kaiser-Ducett and decorated with the art and sculptures of Sicilian immigrant Eugene Romeo, the building stands as a homage to American design with European influence.

Another must see, the Jacob Henry Mansion, offers fine dining and home tours of this opulent Renaissance Revival design. Built for railroad magnate Jacob A. Henry in 1873, the 16,800 square feet home has more than 40 rooms. Its ornate carved wood interior includes a solid walnut staircase. It's also a popular wedding site.

Switching gears to industrial design, check out the Joliet Iron Works Historic Site. Far more than just the building, it makes a great hiking area. A part of the Des Plaines River preservation system, the iron works site includes a 52 acre preserve adjacent to the building with a 0.59 mile educational trail, plus a 10.81 mile Centennial Trail, perfect for hikers and joggers.

The Joliet Area Historical Museum explores Route 66 and settlers of the area, offers traveling exhibits, plus a children's discovery room and gift shop. You'll also find a War Heroes Gallery and a two-story exhibit on space exploration and the Apollo missions.

Racing

The city is home to the excitement of NASCAR in the north. Its Chicagoland Speedway & Route 66 Raceway, established in 2001, hosted the first race in the 2012 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. It hosts two NASCAR Nationwide Series races and a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race annually. In its Champions Park, you'll find interactive displays and a Kid's Club Zone, as well as, live entertainment.
