A Center of History

The city has many options for those seeking to learn more about the history of Puritan settlement. The 500 Puritans under the leadership of John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton can be learned about in detail at the New Haven Museum. While here, you can read about the building and of the colony into what is today a center of history and higher education.

After enjoying the pictures and historical extracts at the museum, take a stroll through the Grove Street Cemetery, once named The New Burying Ground. This was the first chartered burial ground in the whole of the United States, and how is the final resting place to over 14,000 individuals.

Located on Prospect Hill, Marsh Hall was once the Othniel C. Marsh House. Marsh was a renowned paleontologist who had the house built and occupied it until his death in 1899. It sits on nearly 7 acres and contains botanical gardens. The property is now operated by the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

Another historic home and gardens is Edgerton, once the residing place of Eli Whitney II. The grounds landscape was designed in 1909, and visitors here enjoy calm walks among old trees and flowering gardens.

Higher Learning

Yale University, founded in 1701, is a well-known ivy-league school. It's beautiful buildings are home to some of the countries most astounding scholars. Visitors to the area will love walking around the grounds of the campus and taking in the history and elegance.

Excellent Food

Stretch your legs on the Regicides Trail. This seven-mile trail is named in honor of two men who signed the death warrant for King Charles the I. After King Charles the II was reinstated, they fled and hid in caves along the trail. This trail connects with many others in the area and is a great place to let your feet wander where they may.

For a more in-town day outside, try the New Haven Green, a 16-acre private park and recreation area. During the summer, this area is home to many music and art festivals. It is surrounded by historic structures and filled with beautiful trees and landscaping.
