This slice of America is often thought of for its beautiful rural landscapes, but the state also has many impressive cities that are worth visiting. Topeka, the state capital, is home to government offices and is also known for its pristine downtown core and pleasant suburbs. Wichita and Overland Park, which are the two most populated cities in the state, are also great places to visit and interact with the locals.
Intriguing History
The state features some of America’s most fascinating historical sites. The Fort Scott National Historic Site offers a glimpse into what life was like for residents in the area prior to the Civil War. Kaw Point, which is in the West Bottoms area of Kansas City, is the site where Lewis and Clark camped for a brief period during their famous expedition. Other historical sites worth visiting include Shawnee Mission, Dodge City and the Coronado Heights Castle.
Renowned Museums
More about the state’s history, art and culture can be learned by visiting some of the local museums. The KU Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum in Lawrence features many fascinating nature exhibits. Some of the most exceptional American art pieces can be seen at the Wichita Art Museum. Wichita also boasts the Great Plains Transportation Museum, which pays homage to the area’s railroad history. A visit to the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum in Atchison will give you the chance to learn more about one of America’s greatest aviators. The Oz Museum in Wamego contains costumes, movie posters and other relics from the classic film “The Wizard of Oz.”
Mindboggling Oddities
Several odd landmarks and other strange places of interest can also be found throughout the state. S.P. Denton’s Garden of Eden in the city of Lucas features a variety of unique sculptures and is located on the grounds of a property once owned by a Civil War veteran. Lucas also boasts the world’s largest souvenir travel plate, which can be seen along the K-18 Highway. The world’s largest ball of twine sits on display in Cawker City. Greensburg is home to the Big Well, which is the world’s largest well to be dug by hand.
The Great Outdoors
If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you will have no trouble finding plenty of great places to explore throughout the state. Mushroom Rock State Park in Brookville is particularly famous for its unusual rock formations. An old one-room school and another building dating back to the 19th century can be seen on the founds of Prairie Dog Park. Tuttle Creek State Park includes a swimming beach, an equestrian trail and plenty of amenities that are ideal for camping. The Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is a great place to see beautiful flowers and other forms of plant life. If you want to get up close and personal with some animals, you can head to the Tanganyika Wildlife Park in Goddard.
Family-Friendly Amusement
There are also many great places where you can find plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy for a day of fun. The Worlds of Fun amusement park in Kansas City features rides and special exhibitions and also includes the Oceans of Fun waterpark. An exciting game of laser tag can be played at Laser Quest in Wichita. If you travel to Topeka, you can visit Gage Park and ride aboard a mini train or try out the carousel. The Cosmic Jump Trampoline Entertainment Center in Olathe houses a variety of trampolines that allow you to get some serious air.
