History
Come see where it all started! The Joel Lane House is an important stop on your trip to North Carolina because Joel Lane is known as “The Father of Raleigh.” He gained this title because it was on his land that the capital city was placed in 1792. His house and plantation, originally built in 1769, have been saved from the pages of history and restored. On the property, you will encounter hundreds of eighteenth century artifacts and discover what life was like during the early years of the United States.
After learning about the role that Joel Lane played in establishing the capital of North Carolina, you can also learn about his role in establishing Wake County and the United States of America. As a patriot, Mr. Lane served in the militia, represented his home county in the legislature and traveled to the 1789 Constitutional Convention in Fayetteville to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
Family Recreation
For a park that is more than 100 years old, Pullen Place Park is a very active place. Created in 1887 as the first public park in North Carolina, this park offers more than 66 acres of family entertainment.
The community center alone will keep you busy for weeks. It offers classes in yoga, sewing, bridge and karate. Several nights a week, you can find opportunities to dance or play cards. Pullen Place is also home to the 5th oldest, still-operating amusement park in the entire country. Its many amusement rides and vintage carousel will delight you with their authentic, old-time thrills.
In addition to these two splendid features, the park also has an aquatic center with an indoor Olympic pool and warm water therapy pool, an arts center that offers programs in everything from pottery to weaving and the Pullen Park Cafe. Its Theatre in the Park events draw more than 40,000 attendees every year. Add in nine picnic shelters, a tennis court, two ball fields and playground will provide you with plenty to do during your visit.
Theater
The Raleigh Little Theatre started in 1936 and has operated ever since. Each year, it puts on more than 10 theatrical productions and over 150 performances. You can choose to attend one of the many educational classes held on-site or participate in a special event. Their theater camps will give you the chance to spread your acting wings and gain new skills. You should definitely consider visiting them to see their annual holiday production.
Sports
As the home of the Carolina Hurricanes and the North Carolina State University Men's basketball team, the PNC Arena is an active place. Every year 1.5 million people pass through its gates to see over 150 events such as concerts, sporting events and family shows.
You can choose from among 20,000 seats in its 700,000 square feet of space and enjoy great views of hockey and basketball games. You will never go hungry with 18 permanent and 50 portable concession stands that offer delicious arena food.
